Today marks the solemn anniversary of the death of King Hintsa ka Khawuta, a revered
leader of the Xhosa Kingdom, whose tragic end came on 12 May 1835. King Hintsa, a
symbol of resistance and unity, met his untimely death at the hands of evil and wicked
colonial forces who saw Africans as animals.
The manner of his death—shot while imploring for his life, and the subsequent
mutilation of his body—are stark reminders of the brutalities inflicted upon our leaders
by colonial powers. In memory of King Hintsa, and as a tribute to all our great
ancestors, the call by MK party for the expropriation of land and its restitution to the
rightful hands of our kings, queens, and chiefs has never been more urgent. This land,
steeped in the blood and sweat of our forebears, must be returned to foster the
prosperity of our people, as was intended by our ancestors.
Moreover, King Hintsa’s legacy teaches us the paramount importance of unity among
Africans. He exemplified the strength found in cohesive leadership and collective
resistance. Emulating his example, MK party calls for unity across all fronts—cultural,
social, and economic—to reclaim our heritage and secure our future, with
expropriation of land being at the centre.
Today, as we reflect on his life and sacrifices, we call for South Africans to renew their
commitment to these causes, while striving for a future where our lands and freedoms
are restored. A call to honour the memory and legacy of King Hintsa and all other great
ancestors who fought for our sovereignty as we secure a 2/3 majority come 29 May.
